But I don't want to lose my job. Really, did you wanna pay for these items? I straight up call these people out, tell them to settle down, take a step back and relax for a minute. What about those people who are Swipe Happy? I haven't even rung up a single item yet, and they are already swiping their card. No one is coming over to help you, sweetie! Ughh, I just don't understand. Sometimes I watch for suspicious people, people who look like they need assistance, and then I also watch the people who continue to stand at the checkout counter even though there is a large sign that reads "Registers Are Closed." I always wonder, what do they see when they see this sign? Do they even see it at all? How do they miss it? It's funny to watch them for a few minutes as they look around seeing if anyone is on there way to come help them. While I'm at the registers in Adult, I have a clear view over into Body. Therefore, we usually keep the registers closed since no one is over there to cover the store. ![]() Back up using a program that uses “content-aware” backups.Whole-disk encryption is a fine thing, 1 and I use BitLocker on my Windows laptop and Apple’s equivalent on my Macs. Encrypt the resulting backup file(s) yourself, using some encryption tool for example, you might create a password-protected zip file containing the backup after it’s completed, or place the backup in a VeraCrypt-encrypted volume.Choose a password or encryption option within the backup program, assuming it has one.If it’s important to you that such a backup be encrypted, you need to take additional steps. It simply does what it does, which is to back up what it sees: the hard disk’s unencrypted original contents. The fact the disk is mounted and accessible means the backup program neither knows nor cares that encryption was used at all. I say “by definition” because the very reason a backup program might resort to a sector-by-sector backup is that it can’t understand the encrypted data.īackups taken from within Windows while the disk is mounted and accessible are typically not encrypted. Is the backup encrypted?Ī sector-by-sector backup is, by definition, encrypted using whatever whole-disk encryption technology is being used. I think it’s important that you be able to back up from within Windows. Not only does that take significantly more time, but it also can’t be automated and, quite honestly, doesn’t make much sense to me. Some backup programs state you must decrypt the drive (remove BitLocker, for example) to back it up, after which you can re-encrypt it. Some fail to backup an encrypted drive or partition even though the partition is mounted and accessible. ![]() Backup program confusionįor reasons unknown, not all backup programs work as I’ve described. Unfortunately, things still aren’t quite so simple.Ĭurious how disks get encrypted in the first place? How Do I Encrypt a Disk? will tell you. The only option the backup program has is to back up sector-by-sector. Outside Windows: if you instead boot from a backup program’s recovery disk to perform a backup (an option in many backup programs), then you’ll not have mounted your Windows system disk, and its contents will not be accessible to the backup program. It should be able to perform a content-aware backup just as if the system drive were not encrypted. The system drive is completely accessible, not only to Windows but to all the programs you run, including your backup program. Inside Windows: if you install a backup program in Windows and run it from within Windows, it works because you’ve mounted the system drive and supplied the password. If your system drive is encrypted, there are two scenarios for backing up. The only thing it can back up is each physical sector on that disk because it might contain data. Sector-by-sector: when a backup program cannot understand the contents of a disk, it has no way to locate individual files or folders and no way to understand what’s on the disk. Most backup programs work: they locate and back up only the files currently stored on the disk. Content-aware: this means the backup program can see all files on the disk and can back up using that information.Without the decryption key, the data appear to be random. Not mounted: the disk contents are just a collection of sectors, each containing encrypted data.Mounted: a password or key has been supplied, and the contents of the disk are accessible. There are two ways to “see” an encrypted hard disk: This leads to an interesting dilemma when it comes to backing up. If it’s your system drive, you can’t even boot Windows until the correct password or key is supplied. Without the encryption password or key, you can’t access the drive’s contents, period. To access the disk’s encrypted contents, disks encrypted using whole-disk encryption are “mounted” using the encryption password or key. Whole-disk encryption encrypts more than files it encrypts information about the files, including the information allowing the operating system to locate the files on the disk. Whole-disk encryption bypasses it all by ignoring files completely and encrypting everything at the next level down, when the data is written to disk. There are many approaches to encrypting files. (More correctly, it encrypts everything in a partition.) Whole-disk encryption (of the type performed by Bitlocker and other software) encrypts everything on your hard disk. The alternative is a sector-by-sector backup of the drive in its encrypted form, which would require both a complete restore and a separate encryption key in order to recover its contents. The most common and recommended approach is to back up the files on the disk in their unencrypted form, and then secure the backup some other way. There are two ways to back up an encrypted hard disk. The density of dots and the “fatness” of the band present the frequency of a particular value in Y-axis. In the R help mailing list, there was recently a question asked on this topic (which had led me to writing this post) asking for:Ī band of dots on the plot are the data point. In the R web-ecosystem, several people have written and asked about this. But the main focus of this post will (expectedly) be R. I’ve noticed that GGobi has a “texture” 1D plot, which is a very similar implementation of this plot. Implementations in Free Open-Source statistical packages I imagine there is also something similar in the “big” packages (SAS, JMP, SPSS etc…), but I could not yet find an example. (My thanks goes to nico for finding this examples) GraphPad implements this graph under the name “ column scatter plot” (with line drawn at the mean) made from the “Frequency distribution” sample data. Implementations in commercial statistical packages And if you know of an implementation I’ve missed please tell me about it in the comments. This plot has been implemented in various statistical packages, in this post I will list the few I came by so far. The plot can be superimposed with a boxplot to give a very rich description of the underlaying distribution. This “Scatter Dot Beeswarm Box Violin – plot” (in the lack of an agreed upon term) is a one-dimensional scatter plot which is like “stripchart”, but with closely-packed, non-overlapping points the positions of the points are corresponding to the frequency in a similar way as the violin-plot. The above plot is implemented under different names in different softwares. (The image above is called a “Beeswarm Boxplot”, the code for producing this image is provided at the end of this post) In summary, “beeswarm” plots are not recommended as they often create visual artifacts that distracts from the estimated density of the observations. Before that I ran X-clean year-round.Ĭlick to expand. My STI has 21,500 miles on it it's stock except for a axle-back exhaust, and, a oil pressure gauge. I can't definitively say its the best to use since its only my second OCI with it and I haven't done a used oil analysis, but its specs are really close to regular X-Clean and that worked great for me.Įdit: for the last couple of years I had the wrx I ran X-Cess 5w40 in the summer, and X-Clean 5w30 in winter. If its any consolation, old regular X-Clean has 40C viscosity at 70.8 so its even marginally higher than X-Clean EFE at 70.1, and I ran X-Clean for many, many, many years on my previous tuned wrx and even this STI up until last November - I'm on my second round of EFE. And yeah Motul doesn't list 0C viscosity so its tough to tell and it could very well be flowing well at cold crank startup, and just gets to that viscosity sooner than others as it warms up. 40C is where the coolant temp begins registering in the car and the oil is warm-ish (not hot, but warm) so I'm wondering if that thickness in EFE really is a negative, so to speak. This is why oils like 0w20/30/40 both have good VI and are composed of real synthetic base stocks (because they have to be to meet the 0w20/30/40 numbers).Ĭrap I thought more reading would clear this up and I would just move to X-clean EFE.now I am more conflicted than ever.Ĭlick to expand. Those are interesting points, but as was said by bluesubie2, 40C isn't cold like startup temps. I definitely do much less spirited driving and less longer drives in the winter.well with the exception of the occasional hoon in fresh snow (ice covered by 6 inches of snow last weekend baby)Īccording to my recent reading, the better low temp viscosity and higher VI usually indicate real synthetic (maybe better) base stocks in comparison to some (most) 5w30 "Synthetics" that are ultra refined dino-oil-stocks. I wonder if my car ever really reaches normal operating temps for the oil (I don't have an oil temp guage) during these drives.īut I am sacrificing normal op temp viscosity to stay with the Sustina.and I think (THINK-who really knows) we can all agree that the EJ257 could use a thicker oil at operating temp.
